We're Creators! Of Course We're Going to Blog About Social Media Trends

Updated: Dec 31, 2023

Comedy creators are jumping on a new, authentic character trend for the end of 2023.

Hand holds phone with social media folder open. Text title: We're Content Creators

Short form video lovers are enjoying the latest comedy trend, in which the creator starts with "We're [insert character that defines them], of course we...] and proceeds to list off associated traits in collaboration with another creator. A great example of these videos is "We're cousins" posted by Kat Stickler featuring Jon Bouffard of the husband/wife duo, Alex and Jon, which has amassed over 400K likes and over 1000 comments.

Why do people love this social media trend style?

Whether the "We're _____" video is shared to Tik Tok, Instagram or Facebook Reels, Youtube Shorts, or even Pinterest... personality and relatability is favored over production quality in these social media videos. While one creator speaks, the other films the speaker as they walk and talk to the camera, simulating you being on a casual walk with them. The lines are delivered playfully and sometimes ending with a laugh - bonus points if the person behind the camera spontaneously bursts into laughter too. All these aspects make it feel like you're having a casual yet intimate conversation with your friend or family member.

This relaxed filming approach takes pressure off the creator, allow them to easily create more, and gives off authenticity to the audience that makes them feel like they know the creator personally. We have seen an entire niche of people fueling their careers by combining these character video trends with basically a list of quotes and a ring light.

Should I make these comedy videos?

If you gravitate toward short-form comedy videos and consider yourself a creative, creating a series of characters of your own can be highly valuable to you. It's a great list of 10 exercise (shoutout to our beloved Second City peeps) to keep your brainstorming sharp, analyze new characters to play, and showcase your talents on a consistent basis. Even if you're not trying to monetize your social media, it's a marketing and networking tool at the very least. Whether writer, actor, or crew member, you can work alone or get a group together to have some fun filming simple social media trends.
